PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transparent gas barrier member and an organic electroluminescent element using it fully equipped with a gas barrier property required for a sealing material of the organic EL element and a flexibility and easy to manufacture. SOLUTION: The transparent gas barrier member 1 is provided with an ultrathin plate glass 11 of a thickness of 10μm to 70μm and a transparent resin layer 12 attached to at least one face of the ultrathin plate glass 11.
