IMAGE PROCESSOR AND ITS METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a clearer image by automatically controlling the contrast and color balance of a digital image obtained with a digital camera or the like.

SOLUTION: A contrast improvement means 12 applies contrast improvement utilizing a human visual model to an input image obtained with an image input means 10. That is, the means 12 calculates the contrast improvement quantity VRPij of a target pixel Pij by a relative comparison between the pixel value VPij of the target pixel Pij and the weighted mean pixel value VAPij of pixel values included in the peripheral visual field of the target pixel Pij, extracts a value supposed to be effective from the calculated value and generates a contrast enhanced image 3. Since a combination coefficient of the enhanced image 3 and the input image 1 is adaptively changed on the basis of the edge information of the input image which is obtained by an edge information detection means 11 and the luminance of the target pixel Pij, contrast improvement in which a problem of density between a highlight part and a shadow part is solved and the influence of illumination light is reduced can be attained.
