PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an optical attenuator which is inexpensive and can be quickly operated and has a low wavelength dependency of attenuation characteristics in a communication wavelength band. SOLUTION: The optical attenuator attenuates input light inputted to an input optical fiber to output attenuated light from an output optical fiber as output light and has a Fabry-Perot filter and a gradient index lens, and the Fabry-Perot filter has a fixed mirror and a mobile mirror which is arranged so as to face the fixed mirror in such a state that a gap is formed between the fixed mirror and the mobile mirror, and has the movable mirror displaced to the fixed mirror to vary the length of the gap and outputs reflected light of inputted input light as output light attenuated correspondingly to the length of the gap, and the gradient index lens is provided in the vicinity of the input optical fiber and the output optical fiber and condensed input light from the input optical fiber to input it to the Fabry-Perot filter and condenses reflected light to input it to the output optical fiber.
