A fully automated liquid chromatography process has a pre-column and separation apparatus without sample trailing. The assembly has in-process detection cleaning, capillary cleaning and ion sources. A process fully automates an analytical and preparatory chromatography assembly and technical production plant using the liquid chromatography principle. The process has two gradient pumps and an isocratic pump, or three gradient regulated pumps. In each tandem operating sequence, the pre-column plus sample loop link with the capillary zone, the separation column is cleaned and brought to equilibrium. Also claimed is the use of this process in an analytical laboratory in an on-line analytical system.
