This invention relates to lifting means (10) for lifting a frame (11) with respect to a fixed support (15) that includes a frame (11), a reciprocating jack (12) that expands and contracts and which is secured at one end to the fixed support (15), a first bracket (13) on the jack (12) that slidably engages the frame (11) and that moves with the jack (15) due to expansion or contraction of the jack (15). A second bracket (13) is fixed with respect to the fixed support (15) so that it slidably engages the frame (11) and latch means on each of the first and second brackets (13) that are engagable with the frame (11) that allows movement of the frame (11) in one direction with respect to the bracket (13) but engages with the frame (11) to prevent its movement in the other direction. As the jack (12) expands, the latch means on the first bracket (13) engages the frame (11) to move it and, at the same time, the frame (11) slides through the second bracket (13) until the jack (12) requires contraction. At this point, the latch means on the second bracket (13) engages and holds the frame (11) while the first bracket (13) slides with respect to the frame (11). In this way, the jacking means (12), through reciprocating motion, acts to raise or lower the frame (11).
