PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkali storage battery structured so that its deterioration can be suppressed by suppressing short-circuiting in the battery which is caused by resin-like zinc deposited on the surface of a negative electrode when charging and discharging. SOLUTION: This alkali storage battery 100 is composed of a positive electrode can 11, a positive electrode mix 12, a separator 13A, a negative electrode mix 14, a negative electrode terminal 15, and an insulating packing 16. The separator 13A has a non-woven fabric layer and a high polymer micro-porous film layer having a three dimensional network structure. The high polymer micro-porous film comprises a polyolefin based micro-porous film to which at least a surface active surfactant treatment or a sulfurizing treatment is applied. The film thickness of the high polymer micro-porous film is in the range of 16-35μm, and its void content is 30-50 %. Thereby, short-circuiting in the battery which is caused by resin-like zinc deposited on the surface of the negative electrode when charging and discharging can be suppressed, and deterioration of the alkali storage battery can be therefore suppressed.
