Characterizing and/or identifying proteins (I), specific for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) comprises preparing two extracts (E1, E2) containing soluble proteins, with E1 being from RCC, separating the extracts by two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis to produce proteome patterns (P1, P2), each of many proteins, and comparing P1 and P2. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) proteome (P) of RCC comprising a pattern of individual proteins produced by the new method; (2) RCC-associated proteins (Ia), optionally modified; (3) antibodies (Ab) directed against (Ia); (4) protein chip containing (Ia); (5) nucleic acid chip containing sequences (II) that encode (Ia); (6) method for identifying low molecular weight agents that affect RCC; and (7) synthetic DNA that encodes (Ia).
