The device has an electromagnetic ultrasound transmitter (3) with a rectangular coil and a permanent magnet used for propagation of ultrasound waves (5a) in the pipeline (1) and an ultrasound receiver (4) with a rectangular coil and a permanent magnet for reception of reflected ultrasound waves (5b). At least one of the permanent magnets is used for providing a static magnetic field in the pipeline, the longer sides of the permanent magnets extending perpendicular to the longer sides of the rectangular coils. An Independent claim for a material discontinuity detection method is also included.
