PURPOSE: A surface covering rigid member for cutting tool and wear resistant tool is provided to increase the life time of the cutting tool and wear resistant tool by reducing thermal stress of a thin film coated on a matrix by chemical deposition method, thereby suppressing reduction of close adherence degree of the coated thin film and the matrix. CONSTITUTION: The surface covering rigid member is characterized in that a rigid coating film is formed by laying up at least one member selected from the group consisting of nitride, carbide and carbonitride of IV-A group metals including oxygen on a matrix of the cutting tool or wear resistant tool by chemical deposition method, wherein the rigid coating film formed by depositing the at least one member selected from the group consisting of nitride, carbide and carbonitride of IV-A group metals including oxygen on the matrix of the cutting tool or wear resistant tool by the chemical deposition method has a thickness of 0.1 to 10 μm.
