<p>Polyphenylene sulphoxides of formula <FORM:1014159/C3/1> where X is -S- or <FORM:1014159/C3/2> , there being at least one <FORM:1014159/C3/3> , and n is an integer, are obtained by reacting a linear polyphenylene sulphide with 60% to 80% nitric acid at -20 DEG to 40 DEG C. for at least 3 hours. Preferably the reaction is carried out under anhydrous conditions, e.g. by employing acetic anhydride as a solvent. An example is given.ALSO:Polyphenylene sulphoxides of formula <FORM:1014159/C2/1> where X is -S- or <FORM:1014159/C2/2> there being at least one <FORM:1014159/C2/3> and n is an integer of at least 1, are obtained by reacting a linear polyphenylene sulphide with 60% to 80% nitric acid at - 20 DEG to 40 DEG C. for at least 3 hours.
