<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal cell which is easy to manufacture and easily provides necessary in-plane and out-of-plane compensations while relieving trouble on a laminate type compensating layer. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal cell has one or more compensating layers adjacent to the surface of a restrictive layer of the liquid crystal cell, wherein each of the compensating layers comprises a transparent and amorphous polymeric birefringent material whose index of out-of-plane birefringence is <-0.005. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
