PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten and fix a time lag between the operation of a shutter key and the start of an actual photographing operation as much as possible. SOLUTION: An electronic still camera comprises: a CCD 12 for photographing an object image; the shutter key 23 for instructing photographing by a pressurizing operation; a main CPU 20 for generally controlling the entire photographing operation, directly inputting operation signals by the pressurizing operation of the shutter key 23 and instructing the start of photographing by the CCD 12 as an interruption processing to the initial change of the operation signals at the time of the shutter key pressurizing operation; and an image processing engine 13 for resetting the driving timing of an image pickup element to start photographing according to the instruction in the main CPU 20 and executing the processing of image data obtained by the started photographing.
