PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low sulfur content lubricating oil composition which is extremely excellent in abrasion proofness and, simultaneously, long draining properties and the like, particularly a lubricating oil composition suited in use for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The lubricating oil composition comprises a lubricating oil base oil and, based on the entire amount of the composition, (A) 0.005-0.4 mass% alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salicylate having an adjusted constituting ratio of a monoalkyl salicylate having a 10-40C secondary alkyl group of≥85 mol% and an adjusted constituting ratio of a monoalkyl salicylate represented by formula (1) (wherein R is a 10-40C secondary alkyl group; M is an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal; and n is 1 or 2 depending on the valence of the metal) of≥55 mol% and/or its (per)basic salt in terms of the metal element and (B) 0.005-0.2 mass% phosphorus-containing abrasion proofing agent in terms of the phosphorus element, and has a total sulfur content of the composition of≤0.3 mass%.
