PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for searching a recording management area are provided to effectively reduce a total search time of RMD mirror search. CONSTITUTION: A selector(301) selectively outputs track information or address information according to a selective signal. If the track information is inputted through the selector, a binary search and seek controller(302) executes a binary search for detecting an RF(Radio Frequency) signal from a track position corresponding to the track information and judging RMD(Recording Management Data) recording/non-recording, and decides the number of tracks to be jumped according to the result of the judgement and a moving direction of an optical pickup. If the number of track to be jumped is larger than a track number threshold, a comparator(303) outputs a selection signal selecting the track information to the selector. If smaller than or equal to, the comparator outputs another selection signal selecting the address information to the selector.
