PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small, lightweight eddy current speed reducer by reducing power required for changing over to a non-braking state, and by making apparatus compact. SOLUTION: This eddy current speed reducer comprises a braking disc mounted on a rotating shaft, a guiding cylinder supported by non-rotating portions, holding rings capable of moving forward and backward in the direction of the rotating shaft, and a plurality of permanent magnets with the direction of the magnetic poles of the neighboring magnets in the circumferential direction arranged inversely to each other. This small, lightweight eddy current speed reducer is characterized by the structure that magnet supporting plates placed on each permanent magnet are tiltably mounted on the holding rings, and that the holding rings divided into two or more pieces in the circumferential direction are also made inclinable in the direction of the rotating shaft.
