PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device capable of appropriately detecting data break of the group information. SOLUTION: In a group information management section, 1 is added to a variable N when a group leading character string can not be detected and a group end character string can be detected and when the group end character string can not be detected even though the group leading character string can be detected (S25) and 1 is added to a variable K when the group leading character string can be detected and the group end character string can be detected (S27). The group information management section judges that there is group information and there is no data break (S38) when the variable K is not 0 and when consistency in the group and the like are checked (S32, S34, S36) and there is no problem in the consistency and decides that there is group information and there is data break (S39) when the variable N is not 0 and when there is a problem in any of consistency.
