PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow an image forming system to have basic functions at a low cost while expanding functions by allowing a plurality of function adding units to share an image read means and an image forming means as resources as required.

SOLUTION: The image forming system is provided with: a serial port to which an operation section 21 is connected to operate the image forming system having a read section 22 and a write section 23; a process controller 11 for controlling the operation of the system; and a parallel bus 50 for connection to an extension unit having a system controller to manage a job which the system controller allows the read section 22 and the write section 23 to execute. The process controller 11 includes: a means for controlling operations of the operation section 21 connected to the serial port; and a means for receiving a control command from the system controller of the extension unit connected to the parallel bus 50.
