PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a fine image by suitably selecting an image pickup mode for normal image pickup and wide dynamic image pickup and an AE mode without troubling a user. SOLUTION: A high luminance picture signal and a low luminance picture signal outputted from a CCD image sensor 100 are respectively Y/C separated by a signal processing circuit 400 and respective luminance signals are inputted to a computing element 420B, which calculates a mean value and a standard deviation from the distribution of luminance signals. A comparator 430 compares the mean value of the distribution of respective luminance signals with the standard deviation and judges whether the mode of the camera device is the wide dynamic range AE mode or the standard AE mode (and reverse light correction AE mode) from the distribution state. The comparator 430 sends an exposure mode judgment signal to a change-over switch 600 on the basis of the judged result to switch a timing generator 500. Consequently optimum image pickup mode and exposure mode can be automatically judged to perform image pickup operation. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
