A screen or part of the screen of a television set, mobile telephone or monitor has its brightness and/or contrast changed in accordance with a programme sequence. This modulated light is picked up be a light-sensitive part of the watch and a bit-serial code is decoded in a data processor. Internal memory locations are adjusted accordingly to set the time.
