An incinerator comprises a refractory lined refuse shaft 1 and a shaft for solid fuel 2 fed from a hopper 6, separate ashpits 8 and 9 with grates 3 and 5 respectively, a lower opening 15 between said shafts, a flue 7 at the top end of the fuel shaft, a connection from the upper part of the refuse shaft with the ashpit 9 below the fuel shaft, and secondary combustion air intakes 14 provided above the grate in the fuel shaft. Access to the refuse and fuel shaft ashpits is by the doors 11 and 12 which are provided with controllable combustion air openings and access to the upper parts of the gates is by doors 20 and 21. Refuse is fed through cover 4 and cooler coke through the door of the hopper 6. Gases from burning refuse normally pass through the opening 15 but gases and vapours from burning damp refuse pass through openings 18, in the upper part of shaft 1, down the vertical ducts 19 and up through the grate 5. Secondary, preheated air passes to the intakes 14 from the atmosphere through the tubes of the grate 5, through a plenum chamber 13 and through pipes dividing the opening 15 into apertures. A restriction 16 is provided above the intake 14 to ensure intimate mixing of the air and waste gases. A modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), has the grate 5 above the opening 15 and preheated secondary air supplied through the restriction above the grate. |
