A computer system and method for establishing preferences enables the user to place and move indicators of object types or attributes into an area defined by at least one static "variable" axis. For example, the "clarity" attribute can be positioned and adjusted against the axes for preference and frequency and the position of the clarity attribute can be compared by the user against the position within the area of other attributes such as "intuition", "harmony", "modesty" etc. by which attributes the user can characterize a person. The system can determine a "preference profile" from the positioned attributes.
