PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize clamping force by a continuously variable transmission without giving slippage to the continuously variable transmission. SOLUTION: This controller for the continuously variable transmission, activating clamping force in such a direction as to bring a transmission member for mediating torque transmission between an input member and an output member into mutual contact with the input member or the output member, comprises torque determination means (steps S1, S7, S8, S9) for determining that the torque of the output member or the torque outputted from the output member is within a prescribed range; and a clamping force lowering step (step S14) for lowering the clamping force if the torque is determined to be within the prescribed range by the torque determination means (steps S1, S7, S8, S9).
