The fuel injector for an internal combustion engine has a pressure limiting device (60) with a screw fitted in a housing section (14) of the injector. The head of the screw bounds a HP chamber connected to the pump working chamber (22). A sealing face is located on the head of the screw and comes to lie with pretensioning upon a seat. With the overcoming of a predetermined highest pressure the screw is elastically deformed by the pressure acting on its head in such a way that the head by its sealing face is lifted from the seat and opens a connection back to the fuel tank (24).
