PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a scanning optical system and an image forming apparatus using the optical system, by which a high-quality image is easily obtained at high speed. SOLUTION: An incident optical system makes a plurality of laser beams incident in wider width than the width of a deflection surface in a main scanning direction from a scanning area range, and principal light beams being a plurality of laser beams cross with each other on a main scanning cross section at some opening angle near the deflection surface. Assuming that the angle formed by the principal light beams being two laser beams having the largest opening angle out of a plurality of laser beams isΔθ, the number of the deflection surfaces of a light deflector is N and the ratio of an image forming range to the maximum scanning width theoretically deflected by one deflection surface of the light deflector is taken as the scanning efficiencyρof the deflection surface, a condition beingΔθ<(4π/N)×(1-ρ) is satisfied.
