PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assure accurate ignition of a direct injection internal combustion engine while avoiding the dirt of smoke and soot on an igniting electrode. SOLUTION: The external ignition type direct injection internal combustion engine has at least one cylinder 1. The cylinder is provided with a combustion chamber 2 and a cylinder head 3. In the combustion chamber, a cylindrical flow 6 mainly dominates in an intake stage. The cylinder head is provided with a fuel injection valve 7 oriented to an approximate cylinder axis 1a for atomizing a fuel as at least one fuel conical body directly into the combustion chamber and an igniting device 8 having at least one igniting electrode 9 isolated from the fuel injection valve in the radial direction and protruded into the combustion chamber. The cylindrical flow allows the transfer of only an approximately gaseous fuel/air mixture close to the igniting electrode without protruding the igniting electrode into the fuel conical body.
