The unit (33) e.g. phone has transceiver components selectively operating in an infrastructure communication mode for infrastructure communication with a network base station (25) and in a peer-to-peer communication mode for communication with other units (37). A transceiver controller controls the peer-to-peer mode communications with other units based on communication signals received in infrastructure communication. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a method of wireless communication for a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) (b) a wireless network for providing controlled wireless communications with multi-mode wireless transmit/receive units (c) a method of wireless communications for a wireless network that provides controlled wireless communications with multi-mode wireless transmit/receive units.
