The water separator (10) for air conditioning units has a separating chamber located around a housing for the collecting of water deposited on the inner wall of the housing and running into a separating sump (16). At least one opening is provided in the housing for the separating chamber. The separator has air guiding channels which have a cross section which varies over their length, and may be divergent, convergent, divergent-convergent or convergent-divergent. The air guiding channels are spiral in design and the windings which form them are broken and so form several deflection steps.
