<p>The tobacco threads move down a vertical pipe (6) onto a transporter roller (7) with a large number of vanes set at an angle. A beater roller (8) has eight straight vanes which impact on the vanes of the transport roller. Tobacco is thrown downward (53) into a hopper (52,54). There is a rotating shaft (57) with a middle portion of reduced diameter, in the sidewall of the hopper remote from the rollers. There is a continuation of the sidewall (58) above the shaft.
