Aromatic carboxylic acids are prepared by oxidizing alkylaromatic compounds with O2 in a C1- 5 aliphatic carboxylic acid as solvent using as catalyst paraldehyde and a Co salt of the acid used as solvent or of a weaker acid. Examples describe the production of terephthalic acid (I) and p-toluic acid (II) from p-xylene, I from II, isophthalic acid from m-toluic acid and benzoic acid from toluene.ALSO:A catalyst for oxidizing alkylaromatic compounds (see Division C2) comprises paraldehyde and a Co compound, especially a salt of a C1-5 aliphatic carboxylic acid or a weaker acid e.g. carbonic. |
