A ruminant feed supplement includes a synthetic source of nitrogen and a non- toxic hydroxy organic compound selected from lactic and metal salts thereof, monohydric alcohols, excluding ethanol, and di-, tri-. and higher polyhydric alcohols, excluding sugars, the hydroxy compound being present in amount effective to increase the nitrogen retention ability of ruminants. The source of nitrogen may be urea, buiret, ammonium carbonate, ammonium phosphate, or ammonium propionate. The hydroxy compound may be citric, lactic, or malic acid, or a salt thereof, cetyl alcohol, a glycol, glycerol, sorbitol, or mannitol. Protein, molasses, phosphoric acid, and phosphates, may also be present in the supplement. |
