The method involves signaling a message from a first call switching system to a last call switching system if there is a request for call diversion at the called system and releasing the connection between the last call switching system and the called system and sending a further connection request from the last call switching system to the call destination system in response to the incoming message. The method involves establishing a connection between calling (11) and called (14) telecommunications systems via a communications path with one or more call switching systems (12,13), switching the connection at the first call switching system back to the calling system, holding and monitoring the connection over the existing path in the first call switching system, signaling a message from the first call switching system to the last if there is a request for call diversion at the called system and releasing the connection between the last call switching system and the called system and sending a further connection request from the last call switching system to the call destination system (15) in response to the incoming message.
