The invention concerns a method for making a tank for compressed gas, for example natural gas for a motor vehicle, comprising an inner metal casing (1) and an outer shell (8) made of composite material. The metal casing (1) is made from stainless steel including a cylindrical body (2) and two hemispherical or elliptic end caps (3) mutually welded and in making around said inner casing an outer shell (8) made of composite material by filament winding. The inner casing (1) has a thickness of the order of a millimeter. The filament winding is made from a carbon yarn, optionally associated with other fibres, impregnated with an epoxy resin. The invention is applicable to compressed natural gas tanks for vehicles.
