PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative ion generator capable of effectively generating a large quantity of negative ions by just mounting it, for example, on an air blowout port of an air conditioner of an automobile, and a method for generating the negative ions. SOLUTION: This negative ion generator 1 comprises a container 2 equipped with an air introduction part 21 and a discharge part 22, housing tow layers which are laminated, one layer composed of an air-permeable layer member 3 coated with a minus ion generating coating, and the other layer composed of a porous granular material 4 coated with a negative ion generating coating.
