PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk device capable of disposing a hidden area with a simple structure, and allowing the area to be normally used when it is not used as the hidden area. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a magnetic disk, a rewritable nonvolatile storage means 12, a first password (PS) holding means 24, a second PS holding means 25, a PS comparing means 26 for comparing the PSs with each other, and a selecting means 27 for selecting an access destination based on the result of the PS comparison. The magnetic disk is divided into a plurality of small areas. The storage means stores the first division management information 23 of the place/size of a small area hidden to be managed, and the second division management information 20a to 20d of the places/sizes of the other small areas. Only when PS coincidence is determined, the selecting means selects access to the first division management information. Thus, the hidden area is managed not to be seen from the outside and, when a coincident PS is set, this small area is made public to enable access as in the case of a normal small area.
