A vehicle lamp 10 is provided incorporating a sensor 24 for interacting with an operating environment of a vehicle. A light channel 26 is connected to the sensor 24 and is adapted to transmit data away from the sensor 24. A bulb shield 22 maybe disposed between the bulb 16 and the sensor 24. The lamp 10 may include a flat wire 28 operably connected to the sensor 24 and the power supply 30 such as the vehicle battery. The lamp 10 may include a processor 38 adapted to convert data received by the sensor 24 into a light waveform suitable for transmission along the light channel 26. In a further embodiment, the lamp (110,Fig3) may include an antenna (150,Fig3) disposed within the interior chamber (114,Fig3) which may comprise a phase array antenna. The lamp (110,Fig3) may include a second light channel (152,Fig3), second wire (154,Fig3) and second processor (156,Fig3). The sensor may be any suitable sensor such as a radar, radiofrequency, infrared, ultrasonic or lidar sensor. A system is also disclosed that may process the sensed data to make operating decisions relating to braking and steering, mitigation decisions, activation of air bags and provision of a warning to the operator of the vehicle.
