A method and apparatus are disclosed for protecting the weld area of polyolefin coated steel pipe with an epoxy-based coating. The epoxy-based coating adheres well to the metal of the pipe, but does not adhere well to the polyolefin pipe coating. An intermediate bonding material therefore is applied to that portion of the polyolefin pipe coating which will be overlaid by the epoxy-based coating, prior to applying the epoxy based coating. The intermediate bonding layer selected is one which wi ll adhere satisfactorily to the metal of the pipe, to the materials of the polyolefin coating and to the epoxy-based coating. |
