A chamber is automatically vented in the event of fire by a ventilator which is normally urged into the closed position against a selfacting opening device (e.g. a spring) by a remotely powered (e.g: by pneumatic or hyraulic means) actuator. A fire detector in the chamber acts as controller for the actuator whereby, in the event of fire, the actuator is made inoperative to allow the ventilator to open. In addition, the remote power supply may be used to change or reset the ventilator from the open to the closed position. The embodiment described is a multiple system used in a block of flats wherein ventilators 21 are held closed by pneumatic pistons 23 operated by a compressor 28 and storage tank 29. Detectors 25 connected to control means 27 actuate the pneumatic system. |
