PURPOSE: To provide a coin discriminating method capable of positively discriminating whether or not a coin is fouled above a predetermined level by optically detecting a surface pattern of the coin. CONSTITUTION: In the coin discriminating method, reflected light of a surface of the coin is photoelectrically detected, detection pattern data of the surface of the coin is generated, binarization is carried out so that picture element data having a signal strength level of a predetermined signal strength level or more is 1 and picture element data having a signal strength level less than the predetermined signal strength level is 0, bright part pattern data and dark part pattern data are extracted from the detection pattern data on the basis of reference bright part pattern data and reference dark part pattern data, each data signal strength average value of the signal strength level of the picture element included in each pattern data is calculated, a difference between average values of bright and dark is calculated, the difference is compared with a threshold of a coin of a corresponding denomination, and when the difference is the threshold value or more, it is determined that the surface of the coin is not fouled.
