Discharge lamp-operating circuit includes a step-down transformer which supplements the voltage of ionizing pulses and the applied voltage to ensure satisfactory working in the event of a fall in the supply voltage. In the arrangement shown, lamps L are supplied with A.C. from terminals A and C, and ignition pulses are generated by a circuit including a triac V1, a diac D1 and an auto-transformer Tl, T2. The primary T3 of a step-down transformer is connected across the supply terminals A, C and a small voltage is induced in the secondary T4 in phase with, the supply so as to effectively boost the applied-voltage.
