Fluoroalkene polymers with pendant sulfoaryl or phosphonoaryl groups are new. Fluoroalkene polymers comprising repeat units of formula (I) and (II) are new: X, Y = H or F; Z = F or perfluoroalkyl; Ar = a divalent group comprising at least one optionally substituted aromatic carbocycle; W = a bond, O, OCF2, CF2O or (CF2)n; n = 1-10; Q = a bond or (CF2)n; G = SO2R1 or P(O)(OR2)2; R1 = OH, F or Cl; R2 = H or optionally substituted alkyl; and R3-R6 = H, Cl, I, optionally substituted alkyl, F or fluoroalkyl, at least one being F or fluoroalkyl. Independent claims are also included for: (1) membrane comprising at least one polymer as above; and (2) fuel cell comprising at least one membrane as above. |
