VARIABLE LENGTH CODING METHOD AND APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable length coding method which is capable of forward and backward decoding and does not require a large storage capacity even when there are a great number of information symbols.

SOLUTION: In the variable length coding method for assigning code words having code lengths corresponding to the occurrence probabilities of a plurality of information symbols to the information symbols and outputting a code word corresponding to an inputted information symbol as coded data, a code word composed of combination of any one of the plurality of variable length codes which can be decoded forwards and backwards and any one of a plurality of equal length codes of the equal length is outputted as coded data in accordance with the inputted information symbol.
