Labelling apparatus as disclosed in U.K. Specification 1,129,822 is characterized in that a plurality of label receptacles such as 6a, 6b are provided, and the label carrying elements 4 are divided into different groups 4a, 4b each arranged to co-operate with a different one of the label receptacles in transferring labels from the appropriate receptacle to a labelling cylinder 7. As shown, the elements of each group are arranged in alternating sequence, i.e. a, b, a, b. Respective cams 15 withdraw the receptacle 6a from the path of the elements 4b and the receptacle 6b from the path of the elements 4a. The elements are cam controlled so that their curved adhesion faces extend concentrically to a central pivot 1 as they pass a glue applying roller 5 and the cylinder 7. On passing a receptacle, each element pivots anticlockwise on its axis 3 so that its adhesion face performs a rolling action over the front of a label stack to pick up a label. On passing the cylinder 7 each element pivots clockwise to deliver the label to the cylinder at a faster rotational speed characteristic of the cylinder. An alternative embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) comprises a labelling cylinder (7), three transfer members (2) rotating about mutually spaced axes and each having two label carrying elements (4), each member (2) being associated with its own glue applying roller (5) and label receptacle (6). In this embodiment the elements may pivot anticlockwise to deliver a label to the cylinder at a slower rotational speed. |
