PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To resolve the problem that maintaining discharge is not kept to considerably degrade a display state when a maintaining pulse period is made shorter in order to obtain high peak luminance. SOLUTION: A charge recovery period is shortened (Tw1→Tw2) in proportion to the maintaining pulse period when the maintaining pulse period is shortened (Tsus1→Tsus2), so that degradation of a display lighting state can be prevented.
