PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a tension exceeding durability from being applied to a belt, in an engine starter for starting an engine by driving a belt. SOLUTION: A circuit capable of varying an input current and an input voltage supplied from a lead storage battery 26 is installed so that an output from a dc starter motor 32 driving the belt 16 for transmitting the rotational motion of the engine 100 can be adjusted. A controller 36 determines, based on the rotating state of the engine 10 detected by a sensor 34, whether a resistor 38 is included or not in the circuit, and provides a proper instruction to a first relay 40 and a second relay 42.
