PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating method for a two-stroke reciprocating internal combustion engine, particularly a two-stroke large diesel engine, and to provide the reciprocating internal combustion engine operated by this method. SOLUTION: The two-stroke reciprocating internal combustion engine (1) comprises cylinders (2) having outlet valves (3) and scavenging apertures (4), in which pistons (5) are reciprocated along running surfaces (6) between a bottom dead center (UT) and a top dead center (OT), and supercharger groups (7) equipped with turbines (9) driven by exhaust gas from combustion chambers (22) of the cylinders and having rotors (10) for compressing air (11). Compressed air is supplied as scavenging air (12) to the combustion chambers of the cylinders through the scavenging apertures. The outlet valves are opened first and are closed, as well as before subsequent combustion, after fuel injection before subsequent introduction of scavenging air into the combustion chambers of the cylinders and at a scavenge previous stage (V) when rotational speed is lower than at least a predetermined speed.
