PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pneumatic caisson method for controlling subsidence resistance at will, which can be executed without human attendance without the need of manual countermeasure works against subsidence such as saddle work and left-unexcavated work, even if the ground is soft ground lacking subsidence resistance. SOLUTION: The caisson method is carried out by constructing skeletons on the ground, successively immersing the same, and constructing an underground structure at a predetermined depth. According to the method, an expandable/contractive mat body 13 which is expandable outward is set on a peripheral surface of each skeleton, and the mat body 13 is controlled to expand/contract so as to adjust its skin friction force with respect to the ground, depending on the type of the ground.
