PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotation angle detecting device which does not need to use two or more detectors and is inexpensive, and detects the absolute rotation angle of a rotator easily. SOLUTION: This rotation angle detector (rudder angle sensor) 1 is composed of a coarse signal detecting means 3, a fine signal detecting means 4, and a computing means 5. The coarse means 3 converts the whole rotation angle range of forward and reverse directions from the neutral position of the rotator (steering shaft) 2 into an angle range less than one rotation, and outputs a coarse angle signal of one period. The fine means 4 outputs a fine signal which corresponds to an angle repeatedly at every predetermined angle (64 degrees), within the range of the whole rotation angle of the forward and reverse directions from the neutral position of the steering shaft 2. The computing means 5 determines a fine signal output from the fine means 4 is an output of its what-th period, from a coarse signal output value from the coarse means 3, and computes the absolute rudder angleθ2 of the steering shaft 2 by adding an angle corresponding to the fine signal output value to a value obtained by multiplying the predetermined angle (64 degrees) by the period number.
