PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focus electronic endoscope with excellent operability at the time of enlarging observation. SOLUTION: The automatic focus endoscope comprises: a focus adjusting lens 17 movable along the optical axis of an objective lens 15 provided on an insertion part tip 11a; a motor M and a motor driving circuit 34 for moving the focus adjusting lens 17 between a normal observation position and an enlarging observation position; a focus information detection circuit 32 for detecting the focus state of an observation object; and a motor control circuit 33 for deciding whether or not the insertion part tip 11a approaches the observation object on the basis of the detected focus state, moving the focus adjusting lens 17 in an enlarging observation position direction through the motor driving circuit 34 and the motor M in the case that the insertion part tip 11a approaches the observation object and moving the focus adjustment lens 17 in a normal observation position direction through the motor driving circuit 34 and the motor M in the case that the insertion part tip 11a recedes from the observation object. The motor control circuit 33 further controls a moving speed at the time of moving the focus adjustment lens 17 in the enlarging observation position direction to be lower than the moving speed at the time of moving it in the normal observation position direction.
