The activated sludge tank has walls (3, 4) with an internal partition (1) spaced away from them. Aerators (2) on the base (5) are mutually-offset in plan view, on each side of the partition. There is only one aerator on each side of the partition and each has the same area. The aerators extend over at least 4/5 of the spacing between partition and a further partition or the adjacent side wall. The aerators comprise aerator components. The partition is parallel to the side walls. Spacing between the partition and the end wall corresponds with spacing between the partition and a further partition or the adjacent side wall. Further dispositions are detailed. The aerators are plate, disc, cap or tube aerators. They are openings in the base. A number of parallel partitions may be included. Baffles are included on a part of the wall facing the ends of the partition.
