A manual apparatus for fastening a clip around a gathered bag or casing end, comprises an upwardly extending standard, a track adapted to receive a U-shaped clip, a die at the bottom of the track, a punch carrying a rack at its upper end, being driven along the track by pinion means supported on the standard, to compress the clip against the die. The casing end is introduced via a throat 5 and passage 6 to the die 7. The track 18, into which the clips 14 are fed from a magazine 22, receives the punch 34 secured to the rack 36 meshed with a pinion 40. The pinion is driven by a weighted arm 46, which, when moved to an upwardly vertical position from its Fig. 1 position and allowed to fall under gravity, drives the punch down, detaching a clip from the magazine, and deforming it against the die face about the casing end. A bumper 50, e.g. of brake lining material, minimizes noise, and bounce of the arm 46. The fastened casing end is removable from the die face by pulling transversely of the track end, a guard plate 52, fixed to die support 3 by screws 53 carrying springs, being forced outwardly. The track 18 and magazine 22 are angularly displaced from the plane of the die support 3 to permit one leg of a clip to enter each of two channels on the die face so that the clip is deformed helically about the article. |
